Fort Stockton Texas – It was back on November 20th, 2009 that Andrew Reid, was shot and killed by Sheriff Deputy Connie Bassham. She did this after Andrew allegedly  grabbed Deputy Ronnie Turner after a struggle.

Now here is where the story twists. Andrew’s sister, Heather Reid, is suspicious of the police version of the story because she claims that Penco County Sheriff Cliff Harris has said that Andrew took a gun from the police not once but twice. If true that is bizarre to the point of unbelievable. It should be noted that the  two Deputies are on unpaid leave.

Which ever way you look at it the Texas Rangers are being coy in their public response to their ongoing investigation. They say that it will take approximately 3 months to complete their investigation and then forward their report to the District Attorney. It will then be up to the DA as to whether to present this to a Grand Jury, where the jurors will decide whether an indictment of the the deputies is warranted.

The Telecrap Urinal was the first to break this story in Canada and will continue to follow this sad story until its conclusion.

Officers involved in shooting former city man back on job

Two west Texas deputies involved in the Nov. 20 fatal shooting of a former Fredericton resident are back on the job.

Pecos County Sheriff Cliff Harris said Wednesday that the deputies have resumed policing duties.

They were placed on paid leave following the shooting death of Thomas Andrew Reid, 37.

Reid, who was wheelchair-bound, was killed in Fort Stockton, Texas, following a series of unusual events.

“This is the way things work in Texas,” Harris said with regard to his deputies returning to work. “They were off for a couple of weeks and then we had them go through the counselling and stuff like that.

“They said that they were good to go and we put them back to work … (to) get their minds away from what happened.”

Reid, a Fredericton High School graduate, was taken into custody by Pecos County deputies Nov. 19 after he apparently became upset over traffic delays caused by a highway accident.

Reid was released and taken to a nearby hotel until a family member could pick him up.

He later became involved in a scuffle with deputies outside the motel after police received a report that Reid was in the parking lot “screaming and hollering.”

During the altercation, Reid gained possession of one of the deputy’s guns, fired a round and then allegedly had the weapon stuck in the stomach area of one of officers. He was then fatally shot by the other officer.

The incident is being investigated by the Texas Rangers.

Harris said what happens next depends on what conclusions are reached in the Rangers’ investigation.

“Right now, we’re just waiting on the Texas Rangers to finish their investigation,” Harris said. “They are waiting on some toxicology reports and stuff like that. That’s where we stand right now. We’re just waiting on them.”

Harris said he has no idea when that process might reach a conclusion because it can take anywhere from 60 to 90 days to receive toxicology results.

“They (the Texas Rangers) won’t do anything until they get that back.”

Calls Wednesday to the Texas Department of Public Safety weren’t returned.

Reid was en route from his home in California to visit friends in Austin, Texas, when he became involved with police. At one point, he had lived and worked in Texas.

It seems impossible to ever think Andrew would attempt to hurt anyone. He was a brilliant, highly educated, very spiritual, kind man who could read anything and commit it to memory. A gifted man who spoke freely of his hugh faith and belief in God. He had so very, very much to offer the world and was always willing to offer an open mind and thoughtful response. He loved his family with all his heart and soul. He became an extremely good friend of mine, we spent hours and hours visiting about his classes at Hazelden, his many discussions with his professors, exchanging thoughts and gaining great respect for each other for our differences and our similairities. We grew to love one another as a mother and son do, with profound respect for each other.
